Kermit and its sister plane—another P-3 Orion, nicknamed Miss Piggy—have flown into hundreds of hurricanes since 1976 and never lost a passenger. Both sets of planes were designed for the military: the P-3 is like a flying tank, Marks told me; the WC-130 is more like a flying barn. Commercial jets are built for lighter duty, and they try to steer clear of hurricanes. But how will they fare in a windier world?
